Client requirement   Prior to this study, there was no clear way to predict the future impact of electric vehicles on the electricity network in NSW. Evenergi conducted modeling to predict the impact of electric vehicles on distribution networks across 225 postcodes in Ausgrid’s licensed distribution area, using GridFleet’s typology-based methodology.
Evernergi approach The approach to this project was to:

  1. Forecast EV uptakes for each postcode and by vehicle classification within that postcode (i.e. buses, heavy vehicles, private vehicles, etc.)
  2. Determine how key influencers such as battery range improvement, shifts to carshare, and autonomous vehicles, the capability of vehicles to charge at certain rates, and others will impact the charging behaviors of EVs and the resultant effect this will have on the network.
  3. Develop a set of outputs that can be easily integrated into existing processes and import seamlessly into existing software used by Ausgrid.
  4. Produce half-hourly interval electrical load profiles, split by typology (buses, carparks, DC fast charging, fleets, and residential) and forecast out to 2040.
  5. Deliver an auditable and documented model that the market operator (AEMO) would see as credible.
Outcome The project was delivered on time and on budget. A world-first framework was created, along with data collected across the entire network; data that is still being used today.

Subsequent to the program, the product is now being used by several other Network Providers.
